Trauma Counselling & Support, Online in South Africa
Trauma manifests diversely: singular events, prolonged exposures, familial inheritance, or belated recognition of chronic effects. This service provides a paced, client-led space for processing regardless of presentation.
Trauma Manifestations
Trauma appears variably, often subtly: hypervigilance, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, sleep dysregulation, flashbacks, somatic distrust, impaired judgement confidence, or perplexing relational patterns.
Such recognitions neither require labelling nor diminish validity. They signal experiences warranting supported attention.
Therapeutic Approach
Trauma counselling prioritises stabilisation preceding narrative exposure. Initial focus establishes safety: identifying regulating resources, building overwhelm tolerance, and cultivating therapeutic trust.
Progression respects nervous system capacity exclusively. Clients direct content, timing, and depth; no advancement exceeds the window of tolerance. Overload prompts pause, grounding, and deferral.
Trauma Types Addressed
- Single-incident trauma (accidents, assault, medical events, bereavement by sudden loss).
- Complex or developmental trauma from childhood experiences.
- Relational trauma from long-term difficult relationships.
- Secondary trauma from caring for others or professional exposure.
- Intergenerational trauma passed through the family.
Scope of Practice
Acute crises, active suicidality, or recent severe trauma necessitate in-person specialist services or clinical psychologists initially. Complimentary consultations assess optimal care pathways and facilitate referrals when indicated.
