Bereavement & Grief Counselling, Online in South Africa

Grief defies predictable timelines or stages, persisting beyond external expectations. This service provides a dedicated space to experience loss authentically, at its natural pace.

Types of Loss Addressed

  • Death of a partner or spouse.
  • Loss of a parent, whether recent or longstanding.
  • Death of a child at any age.
  • Loss of a sibling.
  • Death of a close friend.
  • Pregnancy loss, miscarriage, or stillbirth (see note below).
  • Death of a beloved pet.
  • Anticipatory grief during terminal illness or decline (see also end-of-life counselling).
  • Complicated or ambiguous grief, such as estrangement, divorce, or relational endings.

Therapeutic Approach

This practice eschews rigid stage models or prescribed timelines for acceptance. Grief manifests uniquely for each individual; the focus is on creating space for existing emotions rather than hastening resolution.

Sessions accommodate diverse needs: verbal processing, emotional expression, shared silence, or practical guidance—such as communicating loss to children, navigating milestones, or managing physical remnants.

Common Grief Responses

Grief often evokes unexpected experiences: sudden waves of emotion, prolonged numbness, anger toward the deceased or others, guilt over unspoken words, paradoxical relief amid sorrow, or longing for one's former self.

These responses are valid components of the grieving process. Counselling offers a non-judgmental forum to articulate them without pressure to resolve them.

Note on Pregnancy Loss

Pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and stillbirth form part of this general bereavement practice. Such grief is legitimate and frequently minimised; all clients are welcome.

For acute early-stage losses—particularly late-term pregnancy, stillbirth, or medically indicated terminations—a perinatal-specialised counsellor may provide optimal support. A complimentary consultation can assess the best fit and facilitate referrals.

Scope of Practice

This counselling does not encompass medical, psychiatric, or palliative care. When grief coincides with severe depression, suicidal ideation, or impaired daily functioning, consultation with a psychiatrist or trauma-informed specialist is recommended first. Referrals are offered transparently, with ongoing grief support available alongside specialist intervention.
