Teen & Adolescent Counselling, Online in South Africa

Adolescence today presents unique pressures absent in prior generations, including pervasive social media, comparison culture, academic demands, identity exploration, and global uncertainty. This counselling provides adolescents with a confidential space to process their experiences independently.

Guidance for Parents

Parents seeking support for their teenager often recognise signs of distress, such as withdrawal, academic struggles, or direct expressions of difficulty. Accessing this page reflects proactive care, and initiating counselling represents a significant step.

A complimentary 15-minute consultation accommodates parents, teenagers, or both, as a suitable starting point. Subsequent sessions are typically one-on-one with the adolescent to ensure privacy, with parental involvement outlined as follows.

Common Adolescent Concerns

  • Anxiety, social anxiety, and panic.
  • Depression, low mood, and diminished motivation.
  • Academic and school-related pressures.
  • Friendship dynamics, bullying, and peer influence.
  • Family conflicts, sibling relationships, or parental separation.
  • Identity exploration, including gender, sexuality, and self-image.
  • Body image issues, eating concerns, and self-harm ideation.
  • Grief and bereavement.
  • Unspecified self-related uncertainties.

Therapeutic Approach

Adolescents differ developmentally from adults; my methodology adapts to their stage, communication preferences, and comfort level. Direct verbal engagement suits some, while others benefit from introductory activities such as drawing, music, or gradual rapport-building.

Online sessions are particularly accessible for adolescents, allowing participation from private spaces. In-person sessions are available in Stilbaai West.

Confidentiality and parental role

Parental consent is mandatory for counselling minors. Once established, session content remains confidential between the counsellor and adolescent, subject to standard exceptions (imminent safety risks, abuse, or legal mandates).

This framework is transparently communicated to both parties at the outset. Any concerns requiring family input are first addressed with the adolescent where feasible.

Scope of Practice

This service does not constitute psychiatric treatment or psychological assessment. For clinical diagnoses, medication, ADHD/learning evaluations, or diagnostic interventions, consultation with a clinical psychologist or child/adolescent psychiatrist is recommended. Referrals are provided openly, with counselling available to complement formal care as needed.
