Chronic Illness & Chronic Pain Counselling, Online
Chronic illness and pain extend beyond medical documentation, reshaping daily functioning, relationships, and self-perception. This service addresses the emotional dimensions alongside existing medical management.
Intended Clients
- Individuals with autoimmune conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, and colitis.
- Those experiencing fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, or similar syndromes marked by persistent pain and fatigue, often minimised by others.
- Persons managing long COVID and associated uncertainties.
- Cancer survivors navigating post-treatment bodily changes.
- Individuals with chronic pain of any aetiology, such as pelvic pain, back pain, neuropathic pain, or post-surgical discomfort.
- Those with invisible illnesses facing validation challenges.
- Partners and family members seeking to provide effective support.
Therapeutic Approach
Chronic conditions impact identity, pacing, grief processes, and life renegotiation. Suffering frequently arises from discrepancies between anticipated and actual capacities, compounded by inadequate responses from social systems.
This practice employs a systems-oriented methodology, fostering wholeness across body, mind, and spirit through the Six Dimensions of Wellness framework. The focus integrates present realities—building sustainable embodiment without resignation—toward meaning and expanded life possibilities.
Focus Areas
- Grief over pre-diagnosis identity, aspirations, and physical capabilities.
- Fatigue from symptom management, medical appointments, medications, and daily demands.
- Medical trauma, including dismissal or repeated self-advocacy.
- Relational impacts: strain with partners, children, friends, and resulting isolation.
- Career and vocational adjustments amid physical limitations.
- Pacing strategies, boundary-setting, and capacity-aligned living while preserving selfhood.
- Narrative reconstruction, positioning illness within a broader life story.
Scope of Practice
This counselling complements—not replaces—medical care. Diagnosis, treatment, pain management, pharmacotherapy, and rehabilitation remain the domain of general practitioners, specialists, pain clinics, physiotherapists, or occupational therapists. This service targets the emotional, relational, and existential dimensions beyond the medical scope.
